The US Army Air Corps D-1 Sunglasses, first contracted by the US military in 1935 and made by American Optical, were the original aviator style sunglasses. The General is the natural successor to this iconic design, with a more bona fide heritage than any other aviator style of sunglasses. Exhibiting the classic tear-drop shape, the General features slightly convex lenses to afford excellent protection from the sun. This has made them a staple among American fighter pilots. The General features all-metal frames and all-metal hinges that give it a feeling of substance, heft and quality that you just do not get from other aviator sunglasses.
Before Ray-Ban and before Persol, there was American Optical. Since 1833, American Optical has designed and produced iconic eyewear worn by the elites and the everyman alike, from US presidents and NASA space crews to blue-collar workers and farmers. American Optical can credibly claim to be the ‘oldest and greatest optical company in American history.’
